J. Human Resource Management:
Reflection: I have had the opportunity to join several hiring committees for the schools I have worked at. Before my second year, the principal and I had interviews for three new members that would join the 5th grade team. It was a very positive experience and gave me valuable time to reflect on my decisions and opinions of the interviewees.
In our district there is a standard list of questions for the variety of positions that can be filled. These questions cover a variety of topics relating to education, but still only skim the surface of the person’s true personality. When interviewing someone for a new position I look genuine answers, not ones that seem generic and rehearsed. One of my favorite questions to ask in an interview is “do you have any questions for us?” I think it tells a lot about the interviewee and their knowledge about the position they are seeking. Once a leader has found new employees, its their job to utilize their strengths, aid them in improving on their deficits and overall retention. I think a mistake some leaders make is stressing quantity or quality when offering professional development to their staff. Personally, I would rather attend a monthly PD involving team building and activities, than a weekly PowerPoint lecture put together at the last minute. |
