A. Leadership
Reflection: My exposure to leadership started when I joined my high school's leadership team. Since then I have had several jobs utilizing these leadership skills. Throughout my practicum I used these same traits to collaborate with staff, motivate peers, and improve culture and climate.
For me, leadership is not a characteristic someone is born with, moreover, it is acquired and transformed through experiences throughout one’s lifetime. A leader’s style comes from the knowledge and understanding of their environment and its constituents. From that a leader may start to foster in a relationship to help shape their ideal climate and culture. When I think of leaders, I reflect to a time in my teaching career where I taught for only three years but had three different principals. At the time, it was frustrating to feel like I had to reinvent myself to adhere to a new climate being ushered into the school. Now I see that this was a valuable opportunity for me to observe three different styles of leadership. I find it interesting to compare how everyone would handle scenarios and then reflect on what style of leadership would have best suited that situations. If given the opportunity to have a leadership position, I would like my peers to have a feeling of mutual understanding. They do not have to adhere to a climate and culture that I mandate; rather, we establish it together through collaboration and communication. |
